The Bachelor of Dance Course (and nested Associate Degree) has a strong focus on and commitment to excellence in the practice of dance. The goal is to develop highly skilled, disciplined, knowledgeable, and versatile dance artists, in an atmosphere which supports and encourages them, as they strive to reach that technical, creative, and scholarly excellence.

Course Highlights

The course is designed to develop Dance performers and educators of excellence through:

  • advanced study in genre of choice plus additional supporting techniques;
  • performance opportunities; an extensive curriculum in choreography;
  • complementary studies (Dance History and Appreciation, Body Science, Music for Dancers, Dance Production, Dance and Film);
  • and electives in Teaching, Music, Drama, Music Theatre.

Course Progression

Students can transfer from the Associate Degree into the Bachelor Degree at any of the below transfer points.Students that have started in the Bachelor Degree also have the option of exiting after 4 trimesters with an Associate Degree.

Graduate Pathways

Projected graduate career opportunities include: Performer; Choreographer; Independent Dance Artist; Studio Dance Teacher; and School Teacher (requires further postgraduate study). Given the transferability of dance knowledge and skills, other career opportunities may include dance production and a range of inter-disciplinary possibilities. 
 
AMPA graduates have been working with national and international companies and artists such as Opera Australia, The Israeli Opera, Bat-Sheva Dance Co., Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, Disney, Shaun Parker & Co, Meryl Tankard, Catapult Dance Choreographic Hub, AUSTI Dance & Physical Theatre, and in musicals such as Madiba, 9 to 5, Chorus Line and more. 

 


Admissions

Entry Requirements: Completion of HSC or equivalent OR completion of at least one full time year of tertiary study OR as a mature age student. Provisional admission may be granted for students limited educational qualifications.

Sharing their expertise with the next generation of music students, graduates will enter the teaching profession in either the tertiary environment or private training sector in parallel with their work in the field. The inclusion of the two graduate seminar units and elective units will be important for students choosing to move into the profession in the areas of performance, composition, production, song writing or teaching at the completion of this two semester program.

The Graduate Certificate in Music, which is nested in the Graduate Diploma of Music, provides students with a customisable course relevant to their needs and professional goals.


Study Areas
 

PRINCIPAL STUDY: All students receive 18 x individual, 1 hour lessons, on a chosen instrument or voice for every semester in the course.

ENSEMBLE: Demonstrate developed suite of professional collaborative skills to engage, direct and perform within a group. Through a range of instrumental and vocal combinations in a wide variety of genres, students will develop skills in improvisation, transcription, transposition, interpretation, sightreading, ensemble direction, accompaniment and rehearsal techniques.

ACADEMIC STUDIES: The study of musical scholarship suited to the diverse range of disciplines that make up the creative industries. These typically fall within the paradigms of critical enquiry research and practice-led research.

ELECTIVES: Relevant to singer songwriters or any students who wish to learn two instruments, the unique Second Study at AMPA provides 18 x individual, 30 minute lessons every trimester. Or choose from electives to complement and refine your degree such as: Music Theatre, Music Industry, Studio Teaching, Recording, Production, Chart Writing and more. In stages 3 and 4 students transition to postgraduate research units to develop research, analytical and writing skills as well as critical thinking, creative thinking, synthesis and conceptualisation.

AMPA’s innovative undergraduate degrees merge high-level performance and practical training with academic rigour and unparalleled industry insight. Students can personalise their degree based around their individual musical interests and aspirations. 

Unlike many institutions in Australia, AMPA remains focused on individual, one-to-one learning. This means that music students are entitled to receive a 60 minute lesson per week as part of their Principal Study unit, along with an additional 30 minute lesson as part of Second Study. The option of taking a Second Study is particularly unique to AMPA, and a valuable tool for students with more than one skill eg. piano/voice or singer/songwriter.  Focus Area: Music Theatre

Within this intensive AMPA program, students undergo technical training across the three core areas for Music Theatre: singing, dancing and acting. This combined with consistent performance and practice opportunities, produces unparalleled triple threat performers. Alongside this rigorous practical training, students receive tuition in music history, industry and performance technique enabling them to graduate ready for the highly competitive and demanding music theatre industry.
 


Study Areas

1. PRINCIPAL STUDY: All students receive 12 x individual, 1 hour lessons, on a chosen instrument or voice for every trimester in the course.

2. MAJOR STUDIES: Develop the necessary technical and artistic skills in a variety of Dance genres and coordinate movement with vocal and acting skills. Examine acting techniques applicable to character driven performance, communicating on set, and developing techniques in using body and voice in characterisation.

3. PERFORMANCE STUDIES: Weekly performances on stage in a live environment with professional sound and lighting.

4. ACADEMIC STUDIES: Gain the technical knowledge required to become a versatile professional. In stages 5 and 6 students transition to more practical based units to prepare for the industry and postgraduate studies.

5. ENSEMBLE: Improvise, experiment and collaborate with students in the music theatre ensemble led by industry seasoned musicians.

6. ELECTIVES: Music Theatre students can choose electives to complement and refine their degrees from classes such as: Production, Music Industry, Jazz Improvisation, Music and Media, Song Writing, and more.

AMPA undergrads may choose to undertake a double major and focus on two areas and can choose electives across all focus areas to further tailor their degree.
 

Focus Area: Music Production & Composition

The AMPA Music Production & Composition department provides students with a range of songwriting and arranging techniques, as well as music production, mixing and recording skills. Students will develop their own unique ideas and explore different modes of music delivery, as well as gain enhanced analytical and theoretical musical knowledge. Students will undergo practical training through individual teaching sessions in the studio and workshopping of their projects, as well as the opportunity to take a second individual study in an instrument or voice. Alongside this, they will receive practical performance skills through collaboration with contemporary and classical performance students and ensembles at AMPA. Practical training is complemented by the study of harmony, ear training, music history and industry studies.

This course is particularly relevant for aspiring songwriters and composers, and those wanting to explore a career in music production, video game music, music for film, content creation and a range of other creative industries.

This intensive and highly practical program centres on individual performance and instrumental/vocal technique, while placing equal focus on ensemble practice and performance. Through this collaboration, students develop advanced technical skills ensuring they are 100% ready for a career as a professional contemporary musician. Studying within the Contemporary Music focus area, you’ll be exposed to a wide range of modern genres, including Rock, R&B, Funk, Punk, Pop, Blues as well as various Jazz sub-genres. You’ll study performance techniques, interpretation, improvisation, stagecraft, soloing, ensemble interaction, as well as reading, arranging, chart writing and ensemble dynamics. You will constantly perfect your skills by performing at AMPA classes and events, and at external gigs and venues.

AMPA boasts some of the finest classical teachers in Australia, who nurture and guide students through their musical journey. The institution designs individually structured courses to ensure students gain the utmost from their degree.

GRADUATE DIPLOMA OF MUSIC

The two trimester Graduate Diploma of Music, which is nested in the Masters program, is designed to enhance the knowledge base, strengthen the performance skills, and reinforce the teaching and organisational abilities of persons who, having successfully completed an undergraduate degree or without qualifications, have achieved a high level of skills and recognition in the field of professional performance. The inclusion of the two graduate seminar units and elective units will be important for students choosing to move into the profession in the areas of performance, composition and song writing, studio teaching, and music retail and distribution at the completion of this two Trimester program. Should they choose to proceed into the Masters program, these units will have prepared them for the successful completion of the units offered in the second year of that course.

On completion of the first two trimesters students can exit with a Graduate Diploma of Music (Performance) and on completion of 4 trimesters students may exit with a Master of Music (Performance).

 

MASTER OF MUSIC

The Master of Music at AMPA are designed to provide graduate students the opportunity to enter the music industry at a more elite level by further developing and specializing their performance and composition skills. It aims to increase the student’s breadth of knowledge in support of an active teaching career either in the private or government sector, at primary, secondary or tertiary level studio teaching. The course will also assist experienced and advanced practitioners who, having achieved distinguished professional careers in the public arena, can derive further knowledge from a music related academic and research environment.

Graduates can share their expertise with the next generation of music students, teaching either in the formal tertiary environment or in the private studio sector in parallel with their work in the field of performance. The skills of those working creatively in the various areas of the extensive freelance sections of the music industry, including: performance, composition, production, music director, session musician, song writing and research will be enhanced. Graduates will also be well equipped to undertake further studies at the Doctoral level.

Applicants who do not have a recognised tertiary award but who demonstrate an equivalent musical ability and maturity at the audition and interview; and who can show considerable performing or composition experience, may be admitted into the Graduate Diploma.

They will also need to demonstrate their writing ability by undertaking a selection of short academic writing tasks.
